I just came across a beautiful story yesterday that really touched me. It’s from a text called “The Gospel of Ramakrishna,” and goes like this:
WHY SHOULD I BEG FROM A BEGGAR
“When Akbar was Emperor of Delhi there lived a hermit in a hut in the forest. Many people visited the holy man. At one time he felt a great desire to entertain his visitors. But how could he do so without money? So he decided to go to the Emperor for help, for the gate of Akbar’s palace was always open to holy men. The hermit entered the palace while the Emperor was at his daily devotions and took a seat in a corner of the room. He heard the Emperor conclude his worship with the prayer, ‘O God, give me money; give me riches’, and so on and so forth. When the hermit heard this he was about to leave the prayer hall; but the Emperor signed to him to wait. When the prayer was over, Akbar said to him, ‘You came to see me; how is it that you were about to leave without saying anything to me?’ ‘Your Majesty need not trouble yourself about it’, answered the hermit. ‘I must leave now.’ When the Emperor insisted, the hermit said, ‘Many people visit my hut, and so I came here to ask you for some money.’ ‘Then’, said Akbar, ‘why were you going away without speaking to me?’ The hermit replied: ‘I found that you too were a beggar; you too prayed to God for money and riches. Thereupon I said to myself, “Why should I beg of a beggar? If I must beg, let me beg of God.”‘”
The point of the story might not be immediately clear. But at least for me, it demonstrates how we depend on outside circumstances for our abundance (or other things we might want in life). Just as the hermit initially sought abundance from the emperor, so we often seek abundance from a job, clients, the government, the stock market, etc.
And when these things don’t give us the abundance we seek, or not as much as we would like, we feel powerless. We try harder to get abundance from these sources, but seemingly the harder we try, the more the flow of abundance dries up.
That’s because abundance never comes from these external sources. It might seem to at times, because externally it has to appear to come from somewhere, but all abundance must come from within.
The issue, of course, is that when we’re stressing about not getting the abundance we feel we need (or deserve), we are tuning out from the real flow of abundance within us. It’s still there — it never stops — but we have tapped out of it.
The more effortless we are in our lives — the more we surrender and resist nothing — the more that stream of abundance can flow into our lives.
and as you likely know, it can only come when we are relaxed, and not feeling the lack of that abundance.
These are simple words and simple concepts, but it’s not so easy to live out, I know. Life can be frightening — we can feel really disconnected at times, especially in the current environment.
But I promise that if you let go of trying to make everything work out for a while, the Universe will surprise and delight you in ways you could not have imagined.
This weekend I’m beginning a three-week class called The Art of Surrender. I believe that absolute surrender is the key to tapping into all the abundance that the Universe has in store for us. And when I say abundance, I mean an abundance of money, of health, of love, or of anything else you could desire.
We are not meant to work very hard to make anything happen in life. We are meant to let go and trust.
This might seem overly passive, but I promise it is not. You do not have to give up your own choices, your own desires, or anything else. You only have to stop trying to get them by your own power, which has never worked anyway.
In this class I will show you the power of surrender and how you can use it in your own life to create greater happiness, joy, abundance, and everything else.
I’m also including a meditation to help you to clear the obstacles to your goals. I’ll send you this meditation right when you sign up, so click below now to get access:
