Through everything I have seen in life, I am convinced that surrender is the best way to live. Struggle, striving, and effort lead to nothing but suffering.
But the ego has a deeply held belief that only by struggle and trying very hard can you accomplish anything.
Look within yourself now. Do you not have the belief that if you do nothing, that nothing good will come to you? Do you not have the belief that you have to go out and bring about the things you want to achieve through action and effort?
And in fact, the more you are convinced that you cannot have these things, the more you feel you have to do to try to get them.
It’s a never ending cycle that just feeds on itself and spins out of control.
It reminds me of someone who is drowning. They say it’s hard to save someone drowning because if you grab onto them, they’ll just pull you under with them. You could be holding out the sturdiest rope to them, but in their panicked struggling, they will often not see it because they are focusing so hard on just trying to stay above water through their own efforts.
The ego believes that it can tread water in life through its own efforts. All the while, the Universe is holding out a rope to you, which will take you to everything good that you could ever desire. But instead of taking that rope, we often insist on trying to make it on our own.
Hint: it’s impossible to make it on our own. Not just very, very hard, but actually impossible. Life was set up to show us that, in as many ways as possible. The goal of life is to teach us that we cannot do it on our own, and need to let go, surrender, and grab onto the Universe’s rope to pull us to safety.
Babies teach us this lesson. Though they cannot walk to get what they need, and cannot speak to ask for what they need, still they are taken care of. We almost have an instinctive drive to give babies what they need to not only survive, but even to thrive.
But as we grow up, we forget this lesson. Now we can walk, can talk, can do all sorts of things on our own. And so we think we must be self-sufficient — we must make it on our own. But that was never the point.
I know how hard it can be to surrender. We have that deep belief that we need to put in a ton of effort, so we miss the rope hanging right in front of us.
What will you do? Will you continue to try to make it all work on your own, or will you give up — surrender — and grab onto that rope?
I mentioned recently that I’m releasing a class called The Art of Surrender. My goal with this class is to teach you how to get out of that habit of effort and struggle, and to surrender to the flow of the Universe instead.
That doesn’t mean giving up your desires at all. In fact it is when you do let go that your desires often flood into your life.
In this class I’ll show you how you can use surrender to stop trying so hard in life, and yet not give up on your desires. It’s a careful balance and people all too often go too far in one direction or the other.
The class will begin in about two weeks. But for those who join early, I do have something for you to start with until the class begins: a meditation to clear your obstacles to your goals.
